Estonian theatre conference
The conference examines the theater landscape that has evolved over the years and decades, which — as a result of both deliberate decisions and spontaneous developments — has become a unique ecosystem.
The first day, titled “Estonian Theater: Ecosystem or Field of Tension,” focuses on the various operating models of theaters, the connections between them, and the challenges and opportunities arising both from within the system and from outside it. Presentations will be given by Harri Ausmaa (Teatri tulevike mõttekoda), Maarja Mänd (Tartu New Theater), and Elin Kard (Estonian Theater Union). The day will conclude with a panel discussion among theater directors (moderated by Hedi-Liis Toome, University of Tartu).
The second day will focus on the future prospects and sustainability of the theater ecosystem. Presentations will be given by a seasoned professional and a newcomer to the field, who will ask each other what it takes to enter the performing arts sector, to stay there, and whether that is enough now and in the future. Speakers include producers Eneli Järs (Kanuti Gildi SAAL) and Getter Marii Kalvik (Rakvere Theater), choreographers Tiina Ollesk, Renee Nõmmik (Fine5 Dance Theater), and Markus Ian Monak (Ian Dance Company), and creative technical staff Revo Koplus (Estonian Theatre for Young Audiences) and Joosep Kurm (Estonian Dance Agency). Representatives from all universities in Estonia offering theater education have been invited to the panel discussion, which will be moderated by Piret Soosaar-Maiberg (VAT Theater).
The Estonian Association of Performing Arts Institutions is celebrating its 35th anniversary with this conference.
The conference is free for everyone, but registration is required and will begin on 15th June 2026.
The event will be held in Estonian.
